What’s wrong with the teenage brain? – Taking a closer look at the prefrontal cortex, the nucleus accumbens, and neuro-plasticity and other ‘unique’ characteristics of the teenage brain may help answer that question.
I often kid with students that I have a fully developed brain and they don’t. I don’t say this to be mean but rather to point out an important aspect of adolescent development that is frequently forgotten when adults (teachers and parents) fail to understand the actions of our students and vice versa. Three very significant differences between the developing adolescent brain and the fully developed brain of an adult involve the prefrontal cortex, the nucleus accumbens, and the concept of neuroplasticity. When taken into consideration, these three aspects of the developing brain can help explain everything from poor judgment or decision-making, to the inability to plan long-term, to risky conduct, and the failure to pick up what us adults like to call ‘common sense’. So, as student select courses for next year and our graduates of 2013 think big for their future, let’s take a closer look at each of these important factors in brain development and see how we as adults can best support our teenagers.
