Principal's Musings...

What’s wrong with the teenage brain? – Taking a closer look at the prefrontal cortex, the nucleus accumbens, and neuro-plasticity and other ‘unique’ characteristics of the teenage brain may help answer that question.

I often kid with students that I have a fully developed brain and they don’t. I don’t say this to be mean but rather to point out an important aspect of adolescent development that is frequently forgotten when adults (teachers and parents) fail to understand the actions of our students and vice versa. Three very significant differences between the developing adolescent brain and the fully developed brain of an adult involve the prefrontal cortex, the nucleus accumbens, and the concept of neuroplasticity. When taken into consideration, these three aspects of the developing brain can help explain everything from poor judgment or decision-making, to the inability to plan long-term, to risky conduct, and the failure to pick up what us adults like to call ‘common sense’.  So, as student select courses for next year and our graduates of 2013 think big for their future, let’s take a closer look at each of these important factors in brain development and see how we as adults can best support our teenagers.

What is Anxiety?
Anxiety refers to the uncomfortable feelings of worry and nervousness that we feel from time to time. It is a common reaction to stressful or new situations. It's the tightness in your stomach before a first date or the tension before a job interview.  Most of the time, the anxiety is manageable and disappears once the situation is over.

A little anxiety can be useful – it can gear us up to do our best or keep us alert in a risky situation.  But for some people, anxiety becomes difficult to manage and begins to interfere in their daily life. Fortunately, there are strategies that can be learned to help keep anxiety at bay. You probably already have some strategies that have worked for you.

If anxiety is starting to get in the way of what you want to do or you would like to learn some additional ways to deal with anxiety, then you may want to explore the other information and resources on this site.
