GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP 11/12 (LITI)
Introducing a NEW Global Citizenship program at Kalamalka: Leaders in Training International (LITI).
LITI is a full semester hybrid program for grade 11/12 students delivered in an innovative 3-stage platform:
- A weeklong introductory high energy boot camp.
- Face to face classes at Kalamalka Secondary mixed with some world class online coursework and webinars joining other GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP students from around the province.
- A Worldview altering international 5 week odyssey in Panama, Central America
Panama will provide a whole new way to look at the world.
In Panama LITI explores conservation of sea turtles, reefs and rain forests. LITI students visit the Red Cross, the United Nations, Habitat for Humanity, The Peace Corps and International Universities in Panama Central America. LITI uses online learning, webinars, state of the art software, dynamic student travel abroad, camp setting, field study, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institutes, Spanish Language study, and Indigenous peoples studies exploring Embera and Kuna culture.
Students will complete all requirements for:
· English 11/12
· Spanish 11 or Intro/beginner Spanish 11
· Leadership 11/12
· Global Education 12
· Independent Directed Studies 12 – or a course selected by the cohort (several to chose from.
Panama is the narrow path between South and North America – all migrating birds and animals make their way through Panama. Most ships traveling in the western world’s shipping lanes will make their way through the Canal. It is the crossroads of the world.
5 Weeks in Panama: a three pronged field study
- Anthropology - Socio-cultural investigation, indigenous peoples, language, volunteerism.
- Ecology - Conservation, sea turtles, reefs, rainforests, tropical research.
- Policy - NGO's, United Nations, Peace Corps, Millenium Development Goals, Red Cross, Habitat.
